Okay, seen the Japanese Ring movies? I thought the American versions are a little cheesy. or other 'horror' movies like Scream, I know what you did last summer...that is so NOT horror, ooh it's a friggin' maniac with a friggin' kitchen knife! I have to run away so he has the chance to stab me! Or squeeze my way through a doggy-door and be killed that way! did she ever think of throwing some of the many bottles or stuff AT the psycho?! or what about breaking a bottle in half and FIGHTING him with it? I mean there was no place to run to so you're as good as dead, you might as well go down fighting. It's not like it's a ghost or some demon that you can't harm because it's invulnerable or something, it's a human being hiding behind a friggin' mask! You take a friggin'baseball bat or a wooden plank with a nail in it and whack him over his friggin' head really really hard and he is gonna go down and once he is, you bash him up so badly that he will not get up and chase you again...problem solved. and if you don't have any of those things...chances are the killer is a man and unless he's had them removed, he's bound to have balls, so you use your foot and kick him in the friggin' groin! you don't scream and run away!!! I salute scary movie that made great fun of what i presume to be a horror flop.

The end

ooh, i hardly spent any moolah to watch most movies i've seen...i usually carefully monitor the tv guide to make sure i get to watch movies that i want to see but can't be bothered to purchase ^^

Not another teen movie was one of those movies, just like american pie, dude where's my car and most of adam sandler's movies ^^ and many many more and if i stumble upon a movie that i like VERY VERY VERY much I'll buy it, like Forrest Gump, saw it on tv first then got it on DVD cuz i liked it so much.

Same thing with Princess Mononoke (Mononoke Hime) and now that i've seen some of the other Hayao Miyazaki work on a movie marathon...I want to get THEM too ^^ aw well...

since when does starting from the third movie mean 'all'?

Personally, I thought the first one sucked.

The second was better.

The third was just a major disappointment.

But I was very happy with the fourth, despite the many edits, but heck after the third movie i came to accept it. Now, as to the 5th movie, important rule: don't go in with high expectations or don't expect anything at all, that way you're bound to escape disappointment.

Anyway, I very recently saw Memoirs of a Geisha and there have been mixed reviews for it (yes, i am the kind of person who reads movie reviews) but I wanted to go see it anyway, since i have this rooted interest in Asian culture.

I went to see it with my brother and I had to sort of persuade him to it, but heck even he enjoyed it.

I absolutely loved the movie and it's amazing that the book was written by, Arthur Golden, a man.

I mean I didn't go in to see the movie completely ignorant, I had studied Japan and it's history previously and knew about geisha (and know that they are NOT prostitutes, not usually) and even the mitsuage thing, but the movie...i mean wow, it blew me away, heck I can't believe the women actually put up with it.

thus concludes my lengthy rant.

Coming soon:

My thoughts on the next movie i'll be seeing, "Keeping Mum"

Ok, I know that I said that my next rant would be on 'Kepping Mum', but the unexpected tends to happen, I'll still be seeing the movie but that's not what i'll be rambling about now.

Now, television is very temperamental, at times it shows nothing but cheesy romances and corny comedies for a month, with an odd addition of cheap action and thrillers without a plot.

However, once in a while the network actually manages to throw something good onto the air.

The movie I watched last night was, 'The Green Mile' based on Stephen King's novel. Now, I haven't read it, and truth to tell I've only read about two of the guys books...and I'm not much of a fan. However, I am a fan of Tom Hanks' movies and trusting this great actor decided to check it out. I was very pleased with the result, other than the too many ads that disrupted my viewing pleasure every 15 minutes, Tom Hanks did not disappoint and to be honest I was surprised that this was based on Stephen King's book.

Anyway, if you haven't seen the movie I urge you to do so at once, rent it, download it, anything.

what? what did I say that I shouldn't have said?

Anyway, i thought Brad did fine in Troy, why does he need a British accent? The story's Greek anyway, if anything they should have been speaking Greek and have subtitles.

Orlando's a Brit so of course HE has a British accent.

In truth, we shouldn't be complaining about accents since the Greeks weren't supposed to speak English at that time and place anyway.

Yes, I did see the day after tomorrow it freaked the hell out of me but i loved it.

And i apologise for one of my previous comments, do NOT download unless you actually pay for it on some kinda official site that's fairly common nowadays, like i tunes where u can legally dl music and stuff by paying for it.

Which leads me to the topic of pirating, whenever you (illegally) dl something you are little by little putting that person out of business cuz lots of their income comes from the sale of their music or films or whatever. But if you can't be bothered to buy the music or movie then rent or borrow it from someone, saves you some cash.

Anyway, now for my rant on 'Keeping Mum'

I viewed the movie with the family on the previous night. Some of the more known names and faces included Rowan Atkinson, Maggie Smith and Patrick Swazey (or how the heck you spell his name).

Not to spoil the experience for those who have yet to see it, I will not go into the movie's content.

However I can say that this will not disappoint. The humour was easy to follow and the jokes/puns and punchlines tasteful and appropriate. (well depends how open-minded you are)

Anyway, I'd give the movie 4 out of 5 stars.

Thus ends my rant,

coming soon: haven't decided on a movie yet...

Ok, Movie Tuesday has come to pass and I have decided to go for Big Momma's House 2, I know I know, it's a sequel and unlikely to match the first but when I 'review' a movie I judge it on its own rather than compare it with its prequel.

Now, yeah the movie had its expected share of drag and gags based on it, and Martin Lawrence stepped into it pretty well...

Now, they really could have done something with this movie, but the 90 minutes they used really didn't do the plot any justice. The most original character for the children would have been the toddler Andrew who has an obsession that I will not disclose. Another was the depressed chihuahua Poncho...

The movie's good for a quick laugh but not something that'd blow your mind.

2 stars for this one

Oh well...tomorrow was a long time ago...I just got back from watching Brokeback Mountain...that I was meant to see with a friend, which I did...

Well, I got there, saw no sign of her...and the movie was starting so I slipped in and decided that I'd be able to spot her as soon as she came in...well, i didn't see anything and pretty much got the impression that I'd been stood up by a friend ^^;

Needless to say I spotted her after the movie had ended and I was making my way out...we both had a good laugh and a brief chat after that...and now I'm here...

Anyway, to the movie...well...

When someone says it's controversial...it's controversial all right...if you've ever seen 'The Sum of Us' starring Russel Crowe (one of his older movies)...you might know what I'm getting at...

It was dramatic and with quite a bit of romance...and more graphic than I had anticipated...heck, no wonder Heath's gotten so much praise for it...it takes guts for a straight man to do what he did...i mean...that was kinda...a yaoi...kinda thing...

So...to all you homo-phobics out there...unless you want a stab at facing your fears, I doubt that this is the movie for you.

However, personally, I liked it. It was bold, controversial and just out there...three and a half stars for this one...

ok, I know that the movies teachers tend to pick out can be drag...but this movie was pretty good...

The movie my calss viewed was, "The Man who wasn't there"

starring Billy Bob Thornton with some other big names, like Scarlet Johannsen and Tony Shaloub.

What is notable about the movie is that it is 'balck and white', not the traditional balck and white movie but monochromatic nonetheless...it's a dark story...and I found it fairly intriguing...it focuses on the life of such a mundane and ordinary person...yet...well, i don't want to spoil anything...I reccomend you check it out, four stars for this one.

You can't say it the same way...4/5 isn't the same as 9/10 after all...right? 1-10 has a wider range so you CAN be pickier at rating it...but...it's harder to do it for five...and need i remind you that this is just my personal rating? I really liked the movie...it was so dark...so strange...and that just appeals to me...if you must know the majority of my classmates thought it was a waste of time, depressing and stupid...I just think that they don't appreciate the art that's gone into it...the music...and because it's black and white the visual effects are limited...and they were done pretty well, it's all about contrast...

WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP...I loved Alysson Hannigan in the American Pie movies but...this is kinda a step backwards...

It all started out well enough, but about 15 minutes into it...it got really really really bad...oh man...talk about a parody that's gone wrong...

The cat...OMG, the cat! THAT was SO WRONG...

Take it from me...if you've seen the trailer...you've seen most if not all the good parts already...so, you won't be missing anything if you decide to pass up on this movie...and don't bother getting it on DVD unless they sell it for like a buck...

1 Star for this one...maybe even just 1/2 a star...

Ok today I took advantage of the $ 7.50 per ticket special at the cinema to see 'The Pink Panther'

Well with Steve Martin in the picture there's bound to be some funny stuff...and there was!

Martin did a great job at being the bumbling inspector Jacques Clousseau (or however you spell it) and there were a great deal of laughs and not just the usual cheap jokes either...

Beyonce Knowles contributed her part with some singing and of course, her looks.

Kevin Kline, took 'Inspector Martin's' abuse very well, and made it look funny ^^

A movie that is definitely worth seeing:

sure it had sex and affairs and whatnot...but...it's plot was much more than that, and sort of took this growth and had this twist in it?

Well, not wanting to spoil it for anyone...I thought it was brilliant, two hours long and I was kept on the edge of my seat...I seriously reccomend it...

Having seen it in the cinema 3 times already, you'd think I'd have gotten bored with it by now...but no...who could ever get bored with a Hayao Miyazaki? The man is a genius! And I need to have ALL of his work on DVD...but so far my collection has three...Princess Mononoke (Mononoke Hime), Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle...*Sigh* If you haven't seen ANY of his work, then shame on you!

No one can call themselves an otaku until they've seen at least one of Hayao Miyazaki's work!

ok first off, in a radical decision to go to the movies today, it was equally radically decided to watch Ice Age 2...

Now, I must say, the drama in this one was virtually non-existant...not necessarilly a bad thing, since comedy made up for it...the jokes were great, the characters great, let's see if you can hear Jay Leno in there...I know I was in shock...

The squirrel and his antics with the nut were as usual hilarious, possibly even better than in the first one...

Hilarious in oh so many ways ^^

3.5 for this one!

and I watched Disney's Cinderella again (I watch the Disney Channel so sue me), and Cinderella 2 that followed as a special...*Sigh* well, I had heard from a friend that it was 'bad' and I am inclined to agree with her...nothing ever compares with the original...maybe it's the budget or the amount of time that has elapsed between the two...it had some whimsical charm to it...but...in the end what was meant to be cute and feely just turned out lame...

1 star...and with that I am being VERY generous...

some other movie about animals loos in the city that I cannot remember...
Shrek 3 (though that won't hit the big screen until 2007, but I've done some research and apparently Shrek takes on the Legend of King Arthur and the knights of the round table in this one)

V for Vendetta:

Starring great faces like Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving though we never get to see his face in the movie ^^

Hugo Weaving has appeared in movies such as Lord of the Rings (an Elven leader of sorts) and the Matrix, as the ever'troublesome' Mr Smith.

The movie is based on a graphic novel series by Alan Moore and David Lloyd first published in the early eighties.

Set in a the near future Britain, the country is subjected to a tyrannical rule under a facist political party, and from all this rises a 'terrorist' known simply as 'V', who hides behind a Guy Fawkes mask.

Guy Fawkes, an English soldier, was a member of the Roman Catholic conspirators who attempted to carry out the gunpowder plot to assassinate King James I, but this was prevented by his arrest on the 5th of November...

A popular nursery rhyme, the first verse refered to quite often in the movie can be seen below:

"Remember, remember, the 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot;
I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,
'Twas his intent.
To blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below.
Poor old England to overthrow.
By God's providence he was catch'd,
With a dark lantern and burning match

Holloa boys, Holloa boys, let the bells ring

Holloa boys, Holloa boys, God save the King!

Hip hip Hoorah!
Hip hip Hoorah!

A penny loaf to feed ol'Pope,
A farthing cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down,
A faggot of sticks to burn him.

Burn him in a tub of tar,'
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head,
Then we'll say: ol'Pope is dead.

Hip hip Hoorah!
Hip hip Hoorah!"

The movie is well-paced, with excellent acting as well as action.

The characters, even the 'hero' V appeal to the audience, featuring themes that can be related to much of our modern history.

With excellent visuals, a well-paced storyline, original characters and well-executed stunts and action scenes:

I must admit that this movie deserves every one of the 5 stars I award to it:

5/5 Stars

I watched Disney's Bambi a little while ago (it's a classic...so sue me <- figure of speech not to be taken literally)

Heh ^^, there's just something I love about the old Disney classics, they have this charm to them...I think it's mainly because back then they were focused on telling the story and getting it across to the audience in such a way that both children and adults could enjoy...however, i feel that that charm is lost today's 2D Disney movies...Home on the Range was just sad, a majpor disappointment, I got the feeling that they were more focused on making it seem 'cool' and 'hip' than anything else...I hope they find their way back onto the true path of the art of 2D animation...

8 Below 3.5 Stars

The Squid and the Whale 2 Stars

Well, they are both personal ratings, and I am not saying that the movies are bad...

ok I'll start with She's the Man

Starring Amanda Bynes from Nickelodeon's Amanda Show and the sitcom What I Like About You.

brief plot description:

Viola (Amanda Bynes) is just your average teen who loves soccer, has rich divorced parents and a twin brother who 'looks like her from behind' (about as average as you can get)

But oh shock oh horror, the girl's soccer team fails to get enough people to sign up for the team and as a result the school cuts the team.

Thus these talented ladies wish to try out for the boys' team but are refused that right, thus Viola decides to pretend to be her brother while he is in England taking part in some music-thing, and attends his boarding school where she is met with more than she bargained for...

A hilariously crazy comedy, with just a few reality issues (but hey, screw reality).

ok, now for:

The Squid and the Whale

It's intriguing in itself that it deals with a matter that is nowadays very common...divorced parents and the effect on their as well as their children's lives...

I'd say that all of it is quite graphic, bold and really hits you in the face...I was most certainly shocked by these possible psychological effects...

I must admit that in that sense it was 'good' but it unnerved me just a bit...hence the lower rating...

I'm more of a comedy person I think...and this movie...though it did have some moments that could be laughed at...just proved to be...in a sense too much on the dark side of things...but hey, the truth and reality isn't always on the bright side is it?

But that is also why we watch movies...to get away from reality...well, at least I do...

i'm sorry I just can't do that...

how would you react if they like decided to make a live action bleach movie and decided to leave some characters out, like hisagi and a large portion of the shinigami since it's too much work and insinuate love interests that are non-existent, e.g. a romance between ichimaru and rangiku

and then get the worst possible actor for one of the best characters, like...Leonardo Dicaprio for Ichigo

COULD you just ignore points like that? Could you?! And then they decide to let Yoroichi maintain cat like qualities while she's in a human form, like whiskers, a tale and ears (after all, they decided to turn mystique into a freak... )

and make 'villains' like ichimaru, that blind guy and so on like totally evil with no compassion whatsoever (After all they did that to magneto)

I watched the Da Vinci Code the other day.

I have to admit I enjoyed it, although many of the explanations went straight over my head and I ended up feeling very confused and not at all sure who was 'good' or 'bad'.

Tom Hanks lives up to his reputation and I really cannot see why people get so worked up over this, after all, it is simply FICTION and if you're silly enough to believe it true without more solid evidence...then well, that's your agenda...

so yeah, i give it a positive 3 stars.

following the movie i explored a book shop and found a book titled:

the Va Dinci Cod

It was a joke/rip-off of the real book of course and I read the blurb on the back of the book:

In blood was written the encrypted message:

THE CHATHOLIC CURCH HAD ME MURDERED!

The detective turned to Donglan and said, "What could this cryptic message mean?"

"It's an anagram." Donglan replied.

"Can you solve it?" the detective asked.

Donglan then meant to say, "I'm an anagram master." But instead said, "I'm an amanana manna...amanna..."

(i read it out to a friend, and we were near hysterics in laughter...I'm seriously considering to buy that book...heh heh, my friend offered to lend me the real thing...but no problem in reading both, eh?)

why was it called the va dinci cod? Well the first page of the prologue revealed that the art museam curator had had a cod shoved down his throat "this was no ordinary murder"

heh heh, it so delightfully points out the obvious...

ok well, I'm a big x-men fan in relation to the comic books and 1990's animated series

However the movies are a horrible and tasteless mess.

And zoro seems to find my suffering funny, which is why i called him a Sayoko-perv (a pervert) which he is and he made a very lame and pathetic attempt at getting me worked up by saying that I get 'turned on' by the pictures of one of my favourite anime characters (which i am not, geez how sad'd that be?)

anyhoo that's the basic gist of it and now to my movie review:

Last night I had the pleasure of viewing "Take the Lead" starring Antonio Banderas

A man who teaches ballroom dancing finds himself teaching a class of school rejects during detention. Incredibly he does this of his own free will.

The movie has great actors who play their characters very well with spectacular dances and moves as well as humour.

A slow start but the movie rapidly picks up the pace as it sets to include sub-plots that fluently intermesh with the main stream and the visuals (dancing) become more intense.

By the end of the movie I for one was simply blown away, I had laughed, found myself in awe and suspense - a feel-good movie that I hadn't encountered in quite some time, I found myself applauding with the rest of the movie viewer.

I have to say:

5/5 - A *MUST*-see

anyhoo, I have somehow managed to cram 2 dvds into my weekend schedule, I viewed both 'Dodgeball' and 'Team America' (not at the same time)

I give Dodgeball 2 stars, it borders on the stupid and insane but just manages to stay close to the border so that it does not become all too tastless.

Now, Team America...I have to say is one of the single most idiotic films out there, it starts out well enough, but the overly unnecessary swearing, the equally unnecessary 'sex' scene and even worse 'vomiting' scene not to mention the dpa talk (don't ask what that stands for) just combine to turn a potentially good parody into something worse.

I give 0.5 stars for this one, I don't reccomend you view it unless you are extremely curious and find stupidity to be mildly interesting...

In regards to more important matters, I recently viewed, 'Barefoot Gen' and having seen plenty of war movies from American and German perspectives, it is my first time watching one that is from a Japanese perspective.

What makes it so different is that it is an anime, an animation, and using an animation to reflect events as horrific as the Hiroshima bombing is a stroke of artistic genius. Of course let us not forget that this is all based on Keiji Nakazawa's manga which was loosely based on its creator's experiences as a survivor of the actual bombing.

Imagining what it must have been like to see the hundreds upon hundreds of bomb-mutilated corpses in the shattered remnants of what was once a city...the smell, the sights...the sound or lack of it...some eye witnesses say that they had seen a group of people, with no clothes, their flesh and skin 'melting' and running, silently, just running, not making a single sound as they were surrounded by orange flames...

It is certainly a powerful piece of visual media and I highly reccomend you watch it.

A tiny excerpt is available on youtube, someone put some music to it too, if you are interested, you can see it at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yz5haMhKoww&search=barefoot%20gen

and also at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzldQ6Q7TWA&search=barefoot%20gen

The art in it may not always be the best, but it is a must-see

I give it 3.5 stars

yeah animation can be very powerful when done right.

the good thing about the people who make anime is that they're not afraid to make their product unsuitable for children, in contrast to western high quality animation.

and one minor note: it's an animated movie not an animation...an animation would suggest it to be a short clip and not a full length movie. ;)

Thunderstruck

Bad Eggs

50 First Dates

Meet the Fockers

Family Guy (episodes)

...ask for ratings only if interested...I'd already seen more than half the listed movies (including Family Guy episodes) so I did not find them too terribly exciting.

And before my departure I had viewed 'Steamboy' an anime (movie) worth watching for the art alone.

And upon my return I was drafted into watching the two dvd's the family rented:

Well I'll just list movies I've seen recently

Pirates of the Carribean 2

House of Flying Daggers

Hotel Rwanda (excellent movie, extremely powerful)

Daredevil (boy this one sucked)

And I've also had a mini marathon of some old video tapes we have, animation and such that I was fond of as a child and i must say they bring back fond memories and I love them still today ^^

Mainly Disney classics...which is why I'm somewhat disappointed with Disney's recent work...the magic's gone now...when Brother Bear came out, I thought maybe...maybe there still is a chance...but...after Home on the Range, I knew I was just kidding myself...shielding myself from the painful and sad fact...the magic...the dreams and imagination of 2-D Disney animated feature length films...was dead and most likely gone forever now replaced with live-action films and 3-D animation films more focused on being 'in' and 'cool' rather than just TELLING the story...I mean, watch the Disney animated films of the olden days, such as Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, Aladdin or The Little Mermaid and you'll get what I mean...or at least I hope you will...

since you're feeling lonely, how about a quick review on: Anchorman, Dodgeball, Hitch, 50 first dates and last but not least Pirates 2? (I'm so excited about this one in particular and I haven't seen it yet...so no spoilers please!)

if you knew how the last disney movies got made you'd know why they sucked. First is that the 'creative' decisions didn't get made by the ARTISTS but by the business people, which are only after the money...not the quality.

Second, there's still some hope. The pixar chef (john lassetter) has taken over the disney animation division and he's a genious. (maybe you've heard that disney has bought up pixar? no?) So he's making sure that disney gets back some quality into their animated movies again AND supposedly he made sure that there's at least one new 2-D movie in the works right now. The directors of the project in question are the same ones who made Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Basil and Treasure Planet. So, as far as magic goes, one shouldn't worry about that. But don't expect anything in the next 4 years...

well, as u might have noticed...I'm very passionate when it comes to disney animated movies...and I could continue rambling about this topic but I think I'll better stop here....

THERE IS HOPE?!

Oh phew...that makes it a bit better...

Now to the requested reviews:

Anchorman

Initially I did not expect much from a movie starring Will Ferrell (even though I found him absolutely hilarious in 'The Producers')

The movie also starred (and guest-starred): Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner, Luke Wilson, Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn...etc.

The Legend of Ron Burgundy, THE anchorman of San Diego, yet another whacked out crazy tale that's worth a laugh but would not qualify for the comedy greats,

2.5 stars

Dodgeball:

Starring: Vince Vaughn, Christine Taylor, Ben Stiller, Rip Torn, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Joel Moore, Chris Williams, Alan Tudyk

An even crazier movie, with good ol' fashioned violence that is funny for some reason, yep they brought back the, 'ball in the crotch' gag.

Basic Plot, two gyms, one popular and modern, the other small old and dilapidated. Globo Gym vs. Average Joes. AJ is in desperate need of money and their only hope of keeping the gym is to win the dodgeball tournament, BUT this is no easy feet as Globo gym seeks to buy out AJ and enters the competition to oppose them and prevent them from winning the prize money...who will win?

2 stars (it's almost a tad too silly)

Hitch:

Starring: Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Kevin James, Amber Valetta, Julie Ann Emery

A story about a 'date doctor' giving average schmoes the chance to approach women who they believe to be out of their league.

A 'romantic comedy' that I have simply grown too tired of after having watched it about 3 times...

2.5 stars

Move reviews for the other two requests at another time...

In the meantime I have seen:

Ladder 49

ok, 50 First Dates:

Starring: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Rob Schneider, Sean Astin, Dan Akroyd

Henry Roth (Sandler) is a Vet whose great ambition is to study the life and behaviour of Walruses in the wild. He has a world of trouble with commitment until he meets Lucy Whitmore. Of all the people to fall in love with, Roth falls for a girl who suffered damage to her short-term memory after a horrific car-crash, waking up every morning thinking that it is a particular Sunday, now this has gone on for a year, her family (father and brother) living the lie with her, as one of the characters sums up, "Lucy does the same thing each and every day" However, Roth is determined, and introduces a tape that sums up her condition as well as events she missed. Thus the courtship begins and appealing to the true romantic, he makes her fall in love with him every day...BUT, Lucy fears that she is getting in the way of his ambitions and wants to break their relationship off...thus the trouble begins...

A romantic comedy with more screen-time for Rob Schneider than he usually gets, with some glimpses of Hawaii ^^ (where the story is set) and lots of pineapples.

3 stars

I have taken extra care to make sure that the below review is spoiler-free, enjoy ^^

Pirates of the Caribbean (2) Dead Man's Chest:

Ah yes, the tale of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) continues...but all is not well, the good captain is behaving stranger than usual, but why?

Thus begins the intrigue, and somehow Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) get drawn back into the adventure...and a new nemesis emerges...

The thrill, the comedy, the adventure, the mystery and chilling suspense is back!

Complete with an abrupt ending that will leave you itching and writhing until you can see the next installment...(yes there is going to be another movie)

4 stars

I was watching an older Vampire Hunter D film...however I quickly lost interest in it, as the dubbing was so utterly horrible, that even the most serious of scenes turned came across as funny...I hate it when bad dubbing ruins good anime...

Well, I don't know too much about Vampire Hunter D...I assume it has a series, however I watched a 'MOVIE' I am also aware that there is a newer movie out...but I watched an older one and I watched the ENGLISH DUB and in most cases, older English dubs are horribly incompetent...what's even sadder is that a lot of today's dubbing is if possible worse...

Other than getting into 'Berserk' (anime series) and 'Great Teacher Onizuka - GTO' (anime series) I've also rented 'My neighbour Totoro' which I am immensely looking forward to watching...

As to your question afro_man...

I wish I had an anime channel...if I did I'd be the happiest cookie ever to exist, however I do not and must make do with what Cartoon Network has to offer on Adult Swim on weeknights...

Adult swim features/d anime such as the Gundam series, Full Metal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone complex, Inuyasha, Initial D...etc.

Well, as for any additional anime, I rent them from a nice li'l place known as 'Video-Ezy' (it carries mostly dvds though...)

And they have this great anime section...I'm currently working my way through the GTO dvd boxset...I watched volume 4 just recently...it is one great anime I tell you...

I haven't quite decided which anime to consider watching after GTO...but I'm confident about finding something...

I think the end was quite clever in retrospect.

It leaves the audience gripped in suspense and now everyone who has seen it is dying to find out what happens next, thus: People are guaranteed to flock to the movies when the next installment of POTC hits the big screens.

On another note, I viewed 'The Devil Wears Prada' last week.

Starring Anne Hathaway (might I add, she has the BIGGEST eyes EVER) and Meryl Streepe (or whatever way her name is spelled)

Initially I thought this would be a pretty lame movie, as it had what I thought was, a pretty lame idea.

As it turns out, even lame concepts can work out with good acting,a decent script and a reasonable budget.

Thus I give the movie that takes a look at the overrated fashion industry:

3 out of 5 Stars.

yeah the end of potc was great, sure I hate the fact that I now have to wait another year to find out what happens next, but who cares. it served it's purpose as an highly entertaining popcorn flick.

ah yes, the devil wears prada. fashion interests me just as much as going shopping...with my mum...or anybody else for that matter...(means 0 interest)
but I have to admit that the second trailer got me kinda curious, as far as the story itself is concerned...maybe I'll watch it, who knows.

Well, for the first time in about...a month I would say, which for me is rather odd...I went out with the family to go see a movie...

It was down to either Eragon or Charlotte's Web and I am happy to report that Charlotte's Web triumphed.

No offence to those of you who would have opted for the other movie, but it just doesn't appeal to me...it makes me go think: yep, sounds/looks like some kind of hybrid between Dragonheart and Lord of the Rings.

So, I went to see Charlotte's Web and I can tell you one thing, I do not regret it.

I am already very familiar with the book, so I knew the story very well but the director still managed to create a very original piece.

With the talents of: Julia Roberts, John Cleese, Oprah Winfrey, Cedric the Entertainer, Robert Redford and Dakota Fanning, this warm uplifting tale of a pig, a spider and her web reminds us to appreciate all of God's creatures...

5 out of 5 stars

I highly reccomend it.

you're lucky because eragon isn't a good movie. While the source material wasn't that breathtaking in the first place, it's the script that pretty much ruined the whole film....excellent special effects though.

Yeah, my brother went to see it with some of his friends and it turned out just as lame as I thought it would be ^^

I haven't read the book, but it's supposed to be good, and I must say, I hardly know of any movies that do the book they are based on justice. Although I must admit some miniseries out there are really good...in particular the miniseries based on some of Stephen King's work...

IF you get the chance watch these:

'Rose Red', 'IT', 'The Shining' (the miniseries, NOT the movie with Jack Nicholson, that sucked) 'Salem's Lot'

Now, on the 26th of December, me and the family got up nice 'n early to catch a double movie premier: 'Happy Feet' and 'Night at the Museum'

I had been waiting to see Happy Feet for a very long time...and while the graphics and visuals and such were amazing, the animation some of the best I had ever seen and the baby penguins very cute...I couldn't help but feel just a tad disappointed...I just felt that something was missing...that it could have been more than it was, but that's just my opinion.

'Happy Feet' : 3.5 Stars

Now, 'Night at the Museum' took me completely by surprise, starring Ben Stiller as the new nightguard, Robin Williams as Theodore Roosevelt and Owen Wilson as some miniature cowboy who calls Ben 'Gigantor', the movie left me smiling and laughing for a long time. I absolutely loved it, the whole idea that at night everything in a museum coming to life...big T-rex wandering the corridors, Attilla the Hun playing soccer with Columbus, Octavius and the Romans at war with the Jebediah and the Cowboys...it's just priceless ^^

I do believe that both movies in their own right are MUST-SEES, but all in all I give 'Night at the Museum':

4 out of 5 Stars

I see u slimmed down ur blog eh?

well the book (eragon) is very overrated if u ask me.

and speaking of stephen king...I don't recall ever having read anything of his work...to completion that is.
I do think I did see the Rose Red one...long time ago though.
The only thing I remember by stephen king is this movie with those weird sharp-teethed cones that attacked some plane and ate up this guy who was constantly ripping paper apart...also a long time ago.

on happy feet most of the sequences used that creepy motion capture technology used on polar express etc...so I guess according to ur review they seem to have improved.

If cinemas weren't so darn expensive I would have seen both of these movies by now..sigh

Since this is the only post that seems to get some moderate attention every now and then, i shall unleash a hopefully brief rant.

I posted an image on my art blog, I submitted the image to illustration friday on sunday...

I've checked it every day since then, each time dismayed to find not a single comment on it and then today, i check it and what do i see?

One comment. Finally, I think. So what do i get when I check it out? No helpful comments, no constructive criticism, not even an opinion, what I get is this:

'double u tee'

wt - what the

now it would have not been so bad if it had been from a stranger, but to have this come from a so-called 'best friend' after days of a disappointing lack of commentary on my newly posted image, really really 'upset' me to put it politely. I can say that I was more angry than upset, no something bordering on furious I'd say.

To be honest, I would have prefered that person to have not commented at all if they couldn't be bothered to maybe read through what I had written in that post, or if they did, at least post a QUESTION that I then would have answered.

But no, instead I get an asinine:

'double u tee'

Screw you!

and a little tip for the next time you submit. Don't link to your blog, link to the static page of your post, because then your picture will be there in the archives for people to see whenever they browse the site and the site creator won't curse you in her mind hehe :)

Since we've discovered the joy of dvd rental we've on average been renting 5 dvd's a week (mostly because it's cheaper to rent 5 instead of 3, and 5 is the most we can manage in a week)

Anyway, so this week's catch involved quite a few movies that were fresh to the weekly rental batch (the new dvd's are only for overnight hire and the most expensive, followed by the 3-day hire as it gets older until it finally makes its way to the weeklies, needless to say it takes a while for a new movie to get to the weekly rental stage)

We got 'Casanova', 'Tristan and Isolde', 'Bonbon (El Perro)' -an international film -, 'Walk the line' and 'Porco Rosso' (a Studio Ghibli Anime)

I always make it a point to vigorously browse through the Anime section and grab at least one anime dvd for the week.

Now, I've watched two out of the five movies with the family:

'Casanova' and 'Porco Rosso'

And I must say that both exceeded my expectations.

I thought that 'Casanova' would be jam-packed mostly with Heath Ledger sex-scenes.

Much the opposite though, there was hardly any of THAT in it. It was quite the refreshing (somewhat) romantic comedy. So, I do reccomend you check it out.

'Porco Rosso' is an anime that I passed up renting on many an occasion but feeling adventurous and assured by the fact that Studio Ghibli had never let me down before I grabbed it and don't regret it at all.

The story and the characters were so colourful and lovable, their antics never failed to get a great big laugh out of me.

The story is of a remarkable pilot, who for his past actions was cursed with a pig's head, hence his nickname 'Porco Rosso' (his name is actually Marco...something or other, I forget) who after leaving the Italian airforce becomes a bounty hunter as the area is abundant with airpirates and he is the only pilot great enough to take them on. During his adventures he meets a talented young engineer by the name of Fiyo whose friendship allows him to rediscover a part of himself he had long forgotten.

An excellent choice in any case,

I give both movies, 4.5 out of five stars.

It was my birthday a day ago and part of my day out involved watching a movie.

My choice was 'The Pursuit of Happyness' and don't think I don't know how to spell 'happiness' because I do, trust me the 'y' has to do with the movie's content.

Now, I've seen Will Smith in 'The Prince of Bel Air', 'Shark Tale', the MIB movies, 'Hitch', 'I Robot', his cameo appearance in 'Jersey Girl' and even 'Wild Wild West' and I may not have seen all of his work, but I doubt that any of them could have featured Will Smith performing at the level he did for 'The Pursuit for Happyness'.

The story of Chris Gardner, a man down on his luck struggling to make a living for himself, but most importantly for his son, is bound to move anyone to the very core.

I could tell you what happened, and give you a plot outline, but I find it impossible to sum up in these few lines, the emotion that I felt whilst in that dark room.

Suffice to say, that I cried when he cried, I felt pain when he felt pain, and I prayed and kept my fingers crossed when it got worse.

What Will Smith did was bring this character (who is based on a real person) to life. I did not see the actor, I saw the man that he was trying to be. He had me completely convinced that he was suffering, that he was in despair that he was all these things he portrayed himself as.

And for an actor to do that, to move someone so deeply...that demands respect.

I believe that 'The Pursuit of Happyness' is Will Smith's finest and most inspiring performance.

5 out of 5 Stars

'Legend of Zorro' Starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones (as well as other actors whose names I cannot recall)

Now, I have to say that the reason for me staying away from this movie for so long is largely attributed to the trailer.

I always look forward to seeing movie trailers for some odd reason...anyway, a good trailer gets me interested and compels me to watch the movie, which as you surely know, is the trailer's purpose.

Unfortunately, the trailer for 'The Legend of Zorro' did quite the opposite. It was the little snippets they decided to include that were about Zorro's son, which gave the impression of 'lameness'.

But, since I've been renting 5 movies a week, I was rapidly running out of good movie choices (it takes a while for new movies to hit the weekly shelf), so I figured, heck I'll give it a go.

So, I rented and watched it.

It was immensly enjoyable and I guess the child appeared lame because the snippets were taken out of context, the boy actually turned out to be a nice addition.

I give it a respectable 3.5 Stars

Now to 'The Warriors'.

It's an older movie, so none of the actor's rang any bells, but if you're interested you're bound to learn more on the Internet Movie Database.

Set in New York (I think or somewhere in that area) 9 delegates from about a hundred select street gangs meet under a temporary truce, to hear out Cyrus, the leader of the biggest and strongest gang in the city, The Riffs.

He proposes that the gangs stop fighting each other over a few feet of 'turf' and instead unite to fight the cops and take over the city.

But...whilst Cyrus speaks, a member from the gang, 'The Rogues' shoots and kills him. With so many people gathered, this results in major confusion and somehow the blame is pinned on the Warriors.

So, now...with the cops and every gang between the park and Cony Island (their turf) after them, 'The Warriors' are forced to bop their way back and try to clear their name...but with 'The Riffs' after them...will they even live to see morning?

I give it a good 4 out of 5 Stars.

Now, I watched 'Stranger than Fiction' yesterday...review to follow.

"This is the story of Harold Crick. And his wristwatch."

'Stranger than Fiction' is a lovely romantic comedy drama (yes yes, I know) starring Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifah.

A lot of people tend to hesitate before agreeing to watch a movie with Will Ferell in it...I guess some of his previous movies have given him a bit of a reputation.

But I am glad to report that he did very well, and that so far, this would have to be one of his better performances, potentially his best.

Tragedy writer, Karen Eiffel (Emma Thompson) has a tendency to write fictional stories about ordinary people, 'nice people' and then kill them off. It so happens that after a ten-year period of writer's block, she has started writing another book.

It so happens that her main character, Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) really exists and that he can hear her narrating to an exact precision and "in much better vocabulary" various aspects of his daily life.

Now, while the narration disturbs him, he is sent into a panic when "the voice" remarks whilst he waits for the bus that "little did he know" Harold Crick would soon die.

Thus Harold seeks advice from a Professor of Literature (Dustin Hoffman) to help discover this 'narrator' to prevent Harold's death...

The film was very entertaining, with lots of laughs and humourous moments and is an all around 'feel-good' movie.

4 out of 5 Stars
